Alpinet lists - alpinet2k
Hi! I spent 4 days in Dogubeyazit 2 years ago. Although we didn't climbed
Ararat, I can give you some useful informations about permits, etc. In
short, there is no need an official permit - but for your safety, it's
recommended to hire a guide who knows the illegal transporters (iranians,
armenians, kurds and turks - most of them armed!) routes and behaviours. the
fee is between 20-50 USD / day depends on the season and services. One night
is 3-5 USD in a cheap but clean hotel in dogubeyazit. The vegetables, fruits
and ceai is extremely cheap, even compared to Diyarbakir, Van, etc. you can
choose from a minimum of 30-40 kinds in the tea shops. it's worth to spend
one day visiting the meteor crater (meteoru cukuru) 2km far from iranian
border station and go to ishak pasa saray. the taxi fee was 20 USD total:
dogubeyazit-meteor crater (very nice landscape to ararat, since the sun
shines the peak, and until 10: 00am you can see the peak without clouds!) -
dogubeyazit - ishak pasa saray - maybe it can be 15 USD if you're lucky.
from the saray we went back by foot, it's about 1-2 hour, and you can see
beautiful coloured vulcanic dunes.
Have a nice trip,
Szabolcs
