There still exists a road in the Calimani mountains from the
18th century, which connected Transylvania to Bucovina
in the time of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
The road was named after its imperial sovereign Maria Theresia
and was of considerable strategic importance.

Over time the road and its story was forgotten.

In the spring of 2014, Tasuleasa Social started researching
historical documents about the old road and then
established its coordinates in the field.
From July 1 to August 15 over 250 volunteers from Romania
and 13 other countries have worked to remove obstacles, cut and clear
overgrowth and add signage to make the trail accessible.
Over 450 posts have been transported by volunteers up the mountains,
placed every 100 meters and fitted with reflective signs.
The volunteers also created two acces points (one from Bucovina,
the other from Transylvania) and five resting areas.

Now the Calimani Mountains proudly accomodate the country
longest thematic trail (42 km) and the only hiking, marathon and
mountain-biking trail that is usable all year round.

Via Maria Theresia este, astazi, numele celei mai lungi poteci tematice din
muntii Romaniei, readusa la viata in 2014 de peste 250 de voluntari
Tasuleasa Social.
Anul acesta, pe 8 august, traseul va gazdui a doua editie a Maratonului Via
